Hello Parents and Guardians,

Since each student in the district has been placed on Home Instruction due to COVID-19, I will be posting the instruction and instructional activities here for each day that school is not physically in session. I will also be online and available by email at [email protected] from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday to answer any and all questions you may have.  Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns you have. Please send any building level questions to either our principal or vice principal(s).  We will all be here to support your children and our community during these difficult times.

Focus Writing Lesson: Write a nonfiction paragraph about the animal you researched yesterday using your 3 facts. Make sure you have a bold beginning, at least 2 detail sentences (these are the facts you found yesterday), and an ending sentence.  Remember to use correct punctuation and capitalization.

Writing:  Listen to Miss Black continue her nonfiction writing on Labrador Retrievers. Parents: Can you please make a graphic organizer like the one I made in my notebook (headings are: Bold Beginning, Facts 1, 2, & 3, and Closing.) It is just a way for your child to organize the parts of their writing, to make it easier to “publish” later on. If your child already wrote their facts in complete sentences, just have them “star” their 3 favorites. They DO NOT need to rewrite them in complete sentences.

Math:  Review lesson 10-1 in their math workbook. You may use the video’s Pearson online as well to reinforce the skill. I assigned the two videos to help teach the lesson (10-1 Video and 10-1 Video2).

Writing: This week in writing, your job is to keep a journal of your adventures with your flat teacher! Each entry should include 3-5 sentences. You can type your entries in Google Classroom or hand write them in a notebook and upload a picture.

Reading: Listen to Miss Havens read the second chapter of the book Flat Stanley.  Please discuss these comprehension questions with your child after listening to the story. They do not need to be written down/recorded.

1. How did Stanley become flat? A bulletin board falls on him while he is sleeping.
2. What is one thing that Stanley likes about being flat? He can slide under doors, he was able to get his mother’s favorite ring from a drain,

Reading: Listen to Miss Havens read the third chapter of the book Flat Stanley.

Please discuss these comprehension questions with your child after listening to the story. They do not need to be recorded. 

Chapters 3 

1. Why does Arthur feel jealous in the beginning of the chapter? Stanley gets to be carried by his dad, but Arthur has to walk.

Write your opinion sentence by stating if you would rather see a troll or a dragon. Then give 1 or 2 reasons why! You can use my example below as a guide.

Writing: Today we will start our last opinion writing piece. Listen to the story “I Wanna Iguana.” In this story, Alex writes letters to his parents about how he wants to get a new pet, an Iguana. He gives his parents many reasons why he should have this pet. When you are done listening to the story, you are going to start brainstorming for your writing. I want you to think of one pet that you really want to have. Write down 3-4 reasons why you should have this pet. This does NOT have to be in complete sentences, this is just your planning. Below is an example of a pet Miss Black really wants, and a brainstorming of reasons she can convince her parents to get it for her.
